What is “Responsible Travel?”

You can enjoy adventure, nature and/or culture, and be socially and ecologically conscious. Responsible travel is about having fun, while also giving back. It is ethical travel that strives to reduce negative impacts of our journey while creating long term benefits to the environment, local people, and their communities.

The last time I checked, I could place my company on an online eco-directory for 0, no proof necessary as to my sustainable practices (other than professing my “green-ness.”)  As a tour operator, I can convey my environmental concern by asking travelers to offset their carbon emissions ? at their expense. How do we determine if our journeys support local communities? Are we staying in locally owned accommodations, eating in local restaurants, being educated by local guides, better insuring financial benefits to host communities? How do we know if negative impacts of travel are being minimized, that long term benefits to local people and communities will outweigh possible short term costs?

Are we being “greenwashed”? Just what is that, anyway? EnviroMedia Social Marketing says greenwashing is “when a company or organization spends more time and money claiming to be ‘green’ through advertising and marketing than actually implementing business practices that minimize environmental impact. It’s whitewashing, but with a green brush.”

Eco Practices?

I recently attended a conference in a U.S. city.  The hotel that hosted the event belongs to a major chain, which touts its commitment to sustainable practices. They have been recognized twice as the Energy Star Partner of the Year for Excellence in Energy Management.  Yet conference attendees were wearing extra layers of clothing to keep warm in the conference rooms due to the air conditioning setting; just think what energy could be conserved if the temperature was set even two degrees warmer.

ABSTRACT:

In today’s world, technology has invaded many aspects of human life. From its gigantic influence on our education and professional development, to the more subtle presence of little gadgets littering our homes, technology is almost everywhere.

The reasons for such pervasiveness would boil down to some characteristics that technology by itself possesses. One such characteristic, which is of major interest to many scholars, is the seeming lack of barriers to the spread of technology. It easily penetrates societies and even to remote communities, and once it reaches its destination and catches on, it becomes seemingly difficult to stop its spread. As a result of this, consumer technology like cellular phones, computers, PDAs, radios and televisions have become commonplace in places like Africa, even with all the barriers one would have envisaged.

Sadly, it does not need much analysis to realize that even though technology usage is growing rapidly in Africa, we still have numerous developmental problems in our continent. This is a situation where advanced technology is coexisting with underdevelopment in Africa. With all the power that technology wields, it will be a useful exercise to study the ways in which it can be used to solve some of those very problems it has come to meet. In essence, using our little gadgets to solve our big problems.

This is the background against which this study is undertaken. Asking whether our problems can be solved at all, then enumerating instances where development projects that utilize technology have been put to work, and concluding by examining the cases and drawing lessons from them.

CHAPTER. 1.

INTRODUCTION

Science and technology are important tools in man’s attempts to exist, develop and take charge of his environment. Ever since the discovery of science and its application man has consistently made efforts to develop various technologies in order to conquer nature, recreate the world for his simplicity and benefits. Right from the primitive times, man invented bow and arrow, fire, hoes, knives, cutlass and so on, in order to deal with the existential problems nature possesses. Even in the present world, the efforts of man are in totality geared towards the provision of food, clothing and shelter and other basic amenities for his survival.

Essentially, man is able to maneuver his way around the cosmos and come up with scientific discoveries because of his natural endowments. Man is naturally endowed with intelligence. He has the mental and natural ability to forge ideas and the capacity to invent. The capacity to invent makes him a creator or an inventor. Thus, the application of science to everyday life manifests in the various inventions of man vis-à-vis the technological developments in human society. Science and technology, therefore, are artificial inventions of man basically put to use for his benefits.

It is pertinent to mention that science does not exist outside the social cultural environment of man. Man is the creator of science and the inventor of technology. In fact, man could be regarded as the highest expression of his environment. The development of science and technology is usually aimed at finding solutions to certain existential problems or difficulties of nature within a particular socio–cultural environment. Although the nature of science suggests an objective application to universal problems and conditions, which is a deductionist approach to science; we cannot, however, deny the fact that it is at first targeted at dealing with particularistic instances within a given environment.
